Ho Chi Minh City & Southern Vietnam Travel Reference Map 1:13K/1:920K
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 37.27 $Saigon, renamed Ho Chi Minh City after 1975, is the economic powerhouse of Vietnam. The central core lies alongside the Saigon River and is the focus of most interest for visitors. The city has doubled or tripled in population since the 1970s. As a result, the city has spread far beyond its civic boundaries, known as Districts. District One contains the early town centre and French colonial architecture, and most of the hotels and restaurants. The international airport is included at the top of the page, and the motorway leading to the north is on the right. As a new feature to this popular title, we have added a detailed map of the southern portion of Vietnam to the reverse side. This includes the Mekong Delta, one of the most interesting areas of the country, the Da Lat mountainous hill town region, the border crossings to Cambodia, the beach resorts of Nha Trang, and the historic market town of Hoi An, south of Da Nang. The map also includes inset maps of Can Tho, in the middle of the Delta, of Da Nang, and of Hoi An, as well as a detailed inset of the resort island of Phu Quoc. This is an extremely useful map for anyone touring the country attractive, informative, and easy to use.

Sidewalk City: Remapping Public Space in Ho Chi Minh City
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 395.35 $For most, the term “public space” conjures up images of large, open areas: community centers for meetings and social events; the ancient Greek agora for political debates; green parks for festivals and recreation. In many of the world’s major cities, however, public spaces like these are not a part of the everyday lives of the public. Rather, business and social lives have always been conducted along main roads and sidewalks. With increasing urban growth and density, primarily from migration and immigration, rights to the sidewalk are being hotly contested among pedestrians, street vendors, property owners, tourists, and governments around the world. With Sidewalk City, Annette Miae Kim provides the first multidisciplinary case study of sidewalks in a distinctive geographical area. She focuses on Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, a rapidly growing and evolving city that throughout its history, her multicultural residents have built up alternative legitimacies and norms about how the sidewalk should be used. Based on fieldwork over 15 years, Kim developed methods of spatial ethnography to overcome habitual seeing, and recorded both the spatial patterns and the social relations of how the city’s vibrant sidewalk life is practiced. In Sidewalk City, she transforms this data into an imaginative array of maps, progressing through a primer of critical cartography, to unveil new insights about the importance and potential of this quotidian public space. This richly illustrated and fascinating study of Ho Chi Minh City’s sidewalks shows us that it is possible to have an aesthetic sidewalk life that is inclusive of multiple publics’ aspirations and livelihoods, particularly those of migrant vendors.

Ho Chi Minh (Routledge Historical Biographies)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 55.64 $Ho Chi Minh explores the life of this globally important twentieth-century figure and offers new insights into his lengthy career, including his often-forgotten involvement with British intermediaries in 1945–46 and with the United States in 1944–45. Ho was the father of his nation, a major protagonist in the Cold War and anti-colonial struggle, and the promoter of a distinctive Vietnamese form of communism. This biography charts his life from his early years and education in Europe to his establishment of the revolutionary pro-communist movement, the Viet Minh, and his subsequent rise to power. Placing important emphasis on his role as a military organizer while stressing his preference for diplomatic solutions, this book contains detailed analysis of the complex talks with France and failure to prevent the Franco-Viet Minh war in 1946. It also follows Ho’s complex relationships with America, China, France, and Russia, and explores the Vietnam War and his legacy. In addition to providing extensive coverage of the 1954 Geneva Conference, the rivalry between Ho and First Secretary Le Duan, and the 1968 Tet Offensive, Ho Chi Minh is also the first English-language biography of Ho to pay close attention to his attitude to women and their role within the communist party. It is the perfect introduction for students of Vietnamese history and twentieth-century history more broadly.

Bury Us Upside Down: The Misty Pilots and the Secret Battle for the Ho Chi Minh Trail
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 30.97 $They had the most dangerous job n the Air Force. Now Bury Us Upside Down reveals the never-before-told story of the Vietnam War’s top-secret jet-fighter outfit–an all-volunteer unit composed of truly extraordinary men who flew missions from which heroes are made.In today’s wars, computers, targeting pods, lasers, and precision-guided bombs help FAC (forward air controller) pilots identify and destroy targets from safe distances. But in the search for enemy traffic on the elusive Ho Chi Minh Trail, always risking enemy fire, capture, and death, pilots had to drop low enough to glimpse the telltale signs of movement such as suspicious dust on treetops or disappearing tire marks on a dirt road (indicating a hidden truck park). Written by an accomplished journalist and veteran, Bury Us Upside Down is the stunning story of these brave Americans, the men who flew in the covert Operation Commando Sabre–or “Misty”–the most innovative air operation of the war.In missions that lasted for hours, the pilots of Misty flew zigzag patterns searching for enemy troops, vehicles, and weapons, without benefit of night-vision goggles, infrared devices, or other now common sensors. What they gained in exhilarating autonomy also cost them: of 157 pilots, 34 were shot down, 3 captured, and 7 killed. Here is a firsthand account of courage and technical mastery under fire. Here, too, is a tale of forbearance and loss, including the experience of the family of a missing Misty flier–Howard K. Williams–as they learn, after twenty-three years, that his remains have been found. Now that bombs are smart and remote sensors are even smarter, the missions that the Mistys flew would now be considered no less than suicidal. Bury Us Upside Down reminds us that for some, such dangers simply came with the territory.

Following Ho Chi Minh: Memoirs of a North Vietnamese Colonel
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 31.58 $For many years, Bui Tin was one of Hanoi's most prominent journalists. Until September 1990, when he decided to remain in France though not, as he insists, to defect, he was Deputy Editor of Nhan Dan, the Communist Party daily, the Vietnamese equivalent of Pravda. Before that he worked in a similar capacity on the Vietnam People's Army newspaper and carried out numerous important assignments. In 1973 he was official spokesman for the North Vietnamese delegation which went to Saigon after the Paris Agreements to arrange the return home of US prisoners of war. Two years later, he was one of the first high-ranking Communists to enter Saigon, and witnessed the scene at Independence Palace when the South Vietnamese government formally surrendered on April 30, 1975. He then went on to report, despite official reluctance, the growing tension on the border between Vietnam and Cambodia which prompted Hanoi to overthrow Pol Pot's regime. Once again, on that occasion, Bui Tin was one of the first Vietnamese to enter Phnom Penh. As many foreign journalists have commented, 'He was always in the right place at the right time.'It was no accident. Bui Tin joined the Revolution and the Communist Party in 1945, which led to his active participation in the war against the French colonial regime. After 1954, he continued to serve as an officer in the People's Army and was promoted colonel following two pioneering treks down what became known as the Ho Chi Minh Trail. The reports he wrote of his observations during these hazardous journeys obviously impressed the leadership in Hanoi, and he was therefore reassigned as an official journalist. In this privileged position, Bui Tin came to know many of Hanoi's top leaders, often accompanied them on their trips abroad, and could not help but observe their strengths and weaknesses.

Ho Chi Minh: The Missing Years 1919 - 1941
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 32.28 $This book explores Ho's pre-power political career, from his emergence at the Paris Peace Conference in 1919 to his organization of the Viet Minh united front at the start of the Second World War. Using previously untapped sources from Comintern and French intelligence archives, Sophie Quinn-Judge examines Ho's life in the light of two interconnecting themes--the origins and institutional development of the Indochinese Communist Party, and the impact on early Vietnamese communism of political developments in China and the Soviet Union.

Ho Chi Minh?s Blueprint for Revolution : In the Words of Vietnamese Strategists and Operatives
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 40.64 $When Saigon fell to North Vietnamese forces on April 30, 1975, the communist victory sent shockwaves around the world. Using ingenious strategy and tactics, Ho Chi Minh had shown it was possible for a tiny nation to defeat a mighty Western power. The same tactics have been studied and replicated by revolutionary forces and terrorist organizations across the globe. Drawing on recently declassified documents and rare interviews with Ho Chi Minh's strategists and operatives, this book offers fresh perspective on his blueprint and the reasons behind both the French (1945-1954) and the American (1959-1975) failures in Vietnam, concluding with an analysis of the threat this model poses today.

Ho Chi Minh: A Biography
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 3.09 $Ho Chi Minh is one of the towering figures of the twentieth century, considered an icon and father of the nation by many Vietnamese. Pierre Brocheux's biography of Ho Chi Minh is a brilliant feat of historical engineering. In a concise and highly readable account, he negotiates the many twists and turns of Ho Chi Minh's life and his multiple identities, from impoverished beginnings as a communist revolutionary to his founding of the Indochina Communist Party and the League for the Independence of Vietnam, and ultimately to his leadership of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam and his death in 1969. Biographical events are adroitly placed within the broader historical canvas of colonization, decolonization, communism, war, and nation building. Brocheux's vivid and convincing portrait of Ho Chi Minh goes further than any previous biography in explaining both the myth and the man, as well as the times in which he was situated.
